Residential trips at Howgills Barn
We’re passionate about working with different Schools and Universities to host education residentials at Howgills Barn. We feel that our wonderful location, at the bottom of the Howgill fells, set in 5 acres of stunning countryside and wildlife, should be enjoyed by everyone….especially children & young adults.
Enjoying the open space in safety and really getting back to basics, is what we’re all about. Town (Sedbergh) is only a 5 minute walk away from our Barn, where there are lovely little shops and cafes set among the cobbled streets and ginnels. There’s a lot to see and do in the area with fell walks leading directly from the Barn front door which take you right up the main fell called Winder. Snake back down to enjoy a home made ice-cream in the local dairy farm at the bottom of the fell. Farfield Mill is also on the doorstep and offers free education visits. Killington Lake is a only a 10 minute drive away. For those looking for a geological challenge, Cambridge University are one of the many groups that come each year to stay with us to study The Dent Fault System which forms part of the Pennine Boundary Fault System in northern England.
What you’ve told us…
It’s wonderful to meet many of the Leaders and Teachers who have often left ‘bleary eyed’ and exhausted after an intense few days, as the children ‘bounce’ back on to the mini bus full of vigor and enthusiasm! As we’re a small business we’ve had the pleasure of meeting with all the schools that have stayed with us and this has helped us to understand how we can help SHARE the workload and make your life, as a teacher/leader much easier. We try to keep our costs as low as possible as we do appreciate the all encompassing pressure of ‘shoe-horning’ costs in to the ever depleting school-trip budget.
You are welcome to plan and deliver your own learning activities at our Barn and we can also organise onsite activities for you such as guided hikes, archery, bush craft and ghyll scrambling.
For those wanting a direct link to the curriculum, we work in partnership with the Field Studies Council (FSC) who offer curriculum based outdoor learning which can be designed to complement and extend the work that you are doing in the classroom.
Take a breather from the classroom…
Our aim is to make sure that both students and teachers get to spend time on learning outside of the classroom, building social relationships and most importantly enjoying the adventure!
We will organise as much of your trip as you want us to. We want your time with us to be as enjoyable and stress free as possible.
The Barn offers sleeping facilities for up to 28 students and up to 4 teaching staff. It also offers;
- An inside games room and ‘tractor shed’ lecture theatre for learning with a difference!
- An outside 2 acre games field
- A commercial catering kitchen
- Seating for up to 35 people
- 8 ensuite bedrooms
- Large lounge for socialising with tables and chairs for studying and dining
- Terrace with tables, chairs and BBQs for outside dining, story telling and toasting marshmallows
- Camp fire to the side of the Barn
- Underfloor heating & a drying room
- We can provide continental breakfast, packed lunches & hot meals
Learning and Exploration
If you would like to organise curriculum based learning, we work in partnership with the Field Studies Council (FSC) which is an environmental education charity committed to helping people understand and be inspired by the natural world. FSC offer both fieldwork and adventurous activities for primary, secondary, A’Level, International Baccalaureate and University students. Through our partnership, FSC deliver outdoor learning at and around our Barn in Sedbergh.
Alternatively you may wish to organise your own activities, or we can help put you in touch with other activity providers for guided walks, canoeing, rock climbing; depending on your needs and budget.
Accommodation costings at the Barn
Our barn is available Monday to Thursday and we do not charge seasonal rates. We believe that our facilities and outdoors should be enjoyed all year round! We ask that groups book a minimum of a 2 night stay (Monday & Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday). The minimum base number we accept is 12 children/students.
Our barn offers 7 en suite bedrooms; sleeping 4 students per room. We also have a bedroom which sleeps up to 4 adults. We do not charge for accommodation for teaching staff.
The cost per student per night is £20 and is based on children bringing their own sleeping bag. All beds come with a mattress cover and pillow. We can also provide duvets, bedding and towels at an additional £5 per person, per night.
We try to be as flexible as possible in terms of payment as we understand the pressures of collating payment from every child! We are happy for you to reserve the Barn for £100 and pay us nearer the time of your stay (within 4 weeks of your arrival date). Takes one little bit of pressure off!
We ask for a standard security bond of £100 and this is fully refundable following your stay, should there be no breakages or damage to the Barn.
