The Dales Way is a long distance footpath of about 80 miles (128 km) situated in the north of England, running from Ilkley to Bowness-on-Windermere. It mainly follows riverside paths, and offers stunning scenery along a route from urban West Yorkshire to the Lake District. Many guests that have stayed with us have said that a reasonably fit family can undertake the route in a week’s holiday. However, it’s worth bearing in mind, that as the walk spans across Yorkshire and the Lakes; there may be the ‘occasional’ drop of rain! We offer drying facilities at Howgills Accommodation and it’s amazing what a good nights sleep, hearty meal (perhaps a cheeky pint!) and some dry clean clothes can do for the ‘walking soul’!
If you don’t fancy ‘lugging’ around a weeks worth of kit, The Dalesway Way is covered by the Sherpa Van Project, a baggage transfer service which will carry your luggage from your last destination to the next. At Howgills Accommodation, we work with Sherpa Van and will organise the drop off and collection of your luggage for you. One less thing to think about and certainly one less thing to carry! There is a route that you can follow and details can be found here. You can plan how much distance you wish to cover in a day and where you would like to stop on the way. There are lots of blogs around if you want to get some idea of how people ‘break up’ the route (read more)
Another popular route with recent guests is The Dales High Way which is a long-distance footpath (90 miles) running from Saltaire in West Yorkshire to Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria. The route runs roughly parallel to the line of the Settle and Carlisle Railway.
The Route divides into six sections. Seasoned walkers might tackle one section each day, though this depends on your pace and experience. For details of the route click here

June 2017: “We stayed in this place whilst doing the Dalesway walk. Its in the very quite location which was perfect after the long tiring day of walk. We were absolutely soaked and wanted to wash our clothes but there wasn’t washing machine so we called the management company and she was very friendly and helpful. She came to pick our laundry herself and washed and dried and brought them back in the morning. It was super nice of her to do that. We would definitely recommend this place if you are staying with your family”.
April 2017: “Booked the bunk barn for my stopover in sedburgh whilst walking the Dales Way. It turned out perfect. There was everything I needed. A short walk to and from the village for provisions and a comfy bed for the night. I will be revisiting with family/friends for a long weekend to use as a base for walking. Many thanks”.
