The weather can change quickly whilst walking on the Fells!
A map. Sat nav is sometimes temperamental in the countryside, so it’s handy to have a map. ‘The Sleepy Elephant’ on the main High Street sells a variety of maps and guides as well as the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) again on the main High Street. The TIC is open Monday to Saturday 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday 12 noon to 4 pm call 015396 20125.
Walks
From a quiet stroll around the river to a more energetic climb up Winder, please find our suggestions.
Farfield Mill
Housed in a restored Victorian woolen mill on the edge of Sedbergh, the Mill offers exhibitions, craft demonstrations, workshops, a heritage center, and a café.
Howgills Ice cream
Situated at the bottom of Winder Fell is an amazing farm selling artisan icecream and sorbets, made from the milk from the cows that graze on the fell. A perfect way to end a fell walk!
Mountain Bike & Cycle
Howgills Accommodation provides an ideal base for cyclists to explore the area, from gentle rides on quiet country lanes to rough mountain tracks. There really is a ride for everyone, depending on the level of adrenalin required! Both the Barn and our Apartments have on-site bike storage.
Golf
Sedbergh Golf Club boasts one of the best golf courses in Cumbria and the North West and is a short walk from both our Barn and Apartments.
River dip & Cautley Spout waterfall
Sedbergh has two Dales rivers, the River Rawthey and the River Dee.
Cautley Spout is just outside of Sedbergh and is England’s highest waterfall above ground. There are flowing pools up this glacial valley that comes down from a high plateau called The Calf.
Quaker Trail
Enjoy a stroll to the Friends’ Meeting House, the birthplace of Quakerism built-in 1675. Reputed to be one of the most attractive meeting houses in Britain. Image courtesy of the AA.
Shop local
Enjoy a break from the monotony of ‘High Store Chain Shops’ and enjoy our lovely little locally run shops including a butcher, fruit and veg shop, arts and crafts shops, hard wear stores, handmade weaving goods to name but a few.
Book Town
Sedbergh is England’s official Book Town and offers a variety of books from cheap reads to collectibles available from a wide range of booksellers in shops & cafes. You can even sit and read a book in our new Book Shelter which is on Main High Street.
