Howgills Barn Facilities
We’re passionate about working with different Schools and Universities to host education residentials at Howgills Barn. We feel that our wonderful location, at the bottom of the Howgill fells, set in 5 acres of stunning countryside and wildlife, should be enjoyed by everyone….especially children & young adults.
Enjoying the open space in safety and really getting back to basics, is what we’re all about. Town (Sedbergh) is only a 5 minute walk away from our Barn, where there are lovely little shops and cafes set among the cobbled streets and ginnels.
Learning is flexible and you can organise this yourself, or we can put you in touch with The Field Studies Council who will come onsite to deliver curriculum based outdoor learning.
You might even just fancy a one off treat of an archery session, geo caching or kayaking!
Our Howgills Barn is available Monday to Thursday and we do not charge seasonal rates.
We offer reduced rates for schools so please get in touch with us and we will offer you a special quotation (please do not book online). The cost per student per night is £20 and is based on children bringing their own sleeping bag. All beds come with a mattress cover and pillow. We can also provide duvets, bedding and towels at an additional £5 per person, per night.
Minimum of a 2 night stay (Monday & Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday). The minimum base number we accept is 12 children/students.
Our barn offers 7 en suite bedrooms; sleeping up to 4 students per room. We also have a bedroom which sleeps up to 3 adults.

“We Enjoyed a highly successful and productive stay at Howgills Barn.
We felt looked after yet independent. The space is ideal for groups of children; providing a safe, spacious and well equipped environment.
The two kitchens and large dining area enabled us to self cater with ease.
The indoor classroom with ping pong table gave us somewhere to gather and relax, which proved invaluable when the weather was poor.
The affiliation with the Field Studies Council worked extremely well for us, providing well-planned, adventurous activities which were tailor made to the needs of our group.
A great residential and will definitely be back!”
